SIT’s Designated Emergency Evacuation Sites
Omiya Campus
(Saitama City)
Campus sports ground
Toyosu Campus
(Koto Ward, Tokyo)
The post-earthquake fire risk at the Toyosu Campus is considered low, and the campus is therefore designated as an area where people can remain without evacuating to a regional evacuation site. If emergency evacuation does become necessary, however, please follow the teaching staff’s directions.
  • Students affected by a major earthquake while at their family home or traveling should try to contact the Student Affairs Section at their campus if possible.

Outside lecture

  • hoursLectures will be canceled.

Dealing with Fires

Ensure that you are aware of the locations of emergency exits, emergency stairs, fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, and emergency escape equipment. If you discover a fire, push the emergency alarm button and try to put the fire out in its early stages. Observe the following guidelines when evacuating during a fire.

  • If it is an emergency, follow instructions provided via the public address system.
  • If no instructions are provided via the public address system, remain calm and evacuate to a safe place.
  • Do not use elevators when evacuating.
  • Try to prevent fire by turning off the gas supply valve, particularly in the event of an earthquake.

SIT will inform students via its website if lectures are to be canceled, or other measures taken at very short notice, due to a typhoon or other natural phenomenon.

Procedure if a Major Earthquake is Predicted

SIT will cancel lectures as soon as the government issues an earthquake warning on the advice of the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Earthquake Assessment Committee.

During lecture hours

  • The public address system will notify staff and students when an earthquake warning has been issued.
  • All information and instructions relating to an earthquake will be relayed via the public address system or by teaching staff.
  • If an earthquake is predicted within a few hours, evacuation will commence immediately, so follow the teaching staff’s instructions regarding evacuation.
  • If an earthquake is predicted within a few days, follow the teaching staff’s instructions.
  • Students who cannot return home due to suspension of public transport will be guided to a designated evacuation site by staff.

Outside lecture hours

  • Lectures will be canceled until the earthquake warning has been lifted.
  • Regular lectures will be resumed once the earthquake warning has been lifted.

Procedures if Public Transport is Suspended Due to a Strike

If a strike is expected to result in prolonged suspension of any of the following transport routes:
Omiya Campus JR Utsunomiya Line
Toyosu Campus Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line
The following procedures will apply:
If the trains have not started running again by 6 a.m. Undergraduate and graduate school lectures will be canceled for periods 1 and 2
If the trains have not started running again by 9 a.m. Undergraduate and graduate school lectures will be canceled for the entire day
  • If prolonged suspension of public transport is expected as a result of an unforeseen incident other than a strike, lectures will in principle proceed as usual. However, if lectures are to be canceled, students will be informed via the Canceled Lectures section of the SIT website (both the PC and mobile versions).
  • If half the time allocated for a lecture has elapsed but the lecture has not commenced, the lecture will be canceled by default.
