なぜ日本に留学しようと思ったのですか？
個人的な理由と仕事上の理由が重なっています。元々異文化を学ぶことに興味があり、日本の文化に興味を持っていました。
自然、人々の敬意、娯楽、歴史についてや、研究レベルが高く、工学の発展が著しい国であることも魅力に感じていました。
そのため、興味のある研究室を見つけた際に留学を決めました。
研究室はどこですか？
堀江亮太先生の、生体通信工学研究室に所属しています。
研究室のテーマは何ですか？
バーチャルリアリティ体験における脳信号の解析を中心に、社会体験の影響や音楽が脳活動に与える影響に着目して研究しています。研究室ではどのようなことを学んでいますか？
生物学と工学の両方を学びました。例えば、脳の構造や様々な刺激にどう反応するかなど、生物学的な側面、脳の信号を解析して処理する方法、新しい統計学や機械学習の概念なども学びました。
日本の大学生活ではどのようなことを学びましたか？
ヨーロッパでの留学経験もありますが、今回の日本では、全く異なる文化圏の人たちに出会う経験をしています。
同時に、社会人としてのさまざまな手続きも経験しました。
この2つのことが、自分を成長させ、視野を広げるのに役立っていると思います。
また、故郷から遠く離れていることで、新たな課題に直面し、日本や母国スペインの良いところを大切にするようになりました。
日本語は思っていたよりずっと難しいということも学びました。
学んだことをどのように活かしていますか？
研究室での経験では、バイオニックコミュニケーション工学に新しい話題を提供し、発展させるような研究を心がけています。日本での生活では、直面した困難や皆から学んだ良いことを集め、GLCでのアルバイトを通じてSITの学生や友人の支援に役立てようと思っています。
大学生、大学院生にメッセージをお願いします。
日本に来たこと、SITに来たことは、私の人生の中で最高の決断の一つだと思います。
だから、もし機会があって、どうしようかと迷っている人がいたら、チャンスは掴んだ方がいいと思います。
なぜなら、選択肢は2つあるからです。
うまくいくか、いかないか。最初のケースは完璧です。
そして、可能性の低い2つ目のケースでは、「どうなっていただろう」といつまでも考えるより、失敗を認めてそこから学んだほうがいいと思うのです。

・Where is your laboratory?
I am part of the Laboratory for Bionic Communication Engineering with Horie Ryota Sensei.
・What is your theme of laboratory?
My research is focused on brain signal analysis in virtual reality experiences, with focus on the social experiences’ impact and the influence of music over the brain activity.
・What did you learn in your laboratory experience?
I learnt both biology and engineering. For instance, I learnt the biological aspects of the brain, regarding it structure and how it reacts to different stimuli. But I also learnt how to analyze and process the brain signals, or new statistical and machine learning concepts.
・What did you learn in your university life in Japan?
I have had previous experiences studying abroad in Europe, however, this time in Japan I am fully experiencing the opportunity to study and meet people from very different cultures. At the same time, I have also experienced different procedures in the working environment. I think that both things have helped me to grow and expand my views.
Additionally, being this far from home made me face new challenges and put on value the good things of Japan and my home country, Spain.
I also learnt that Japanese language is far more difficult than I expected hahaha, but I won’t give up.
・Why did you decide to study abroad in Japan?
There are personal and professional reasons combined. I have always been interested on learning about other cultures. So, this time I decided I wanted to go to a country with bigger cultural differences. In my case, I had interest on Japanese culture before coming... the combination of nature, people’s respect, entertainment, history, etc. Moreover, it is a country with high research levels and advanced development on engineering. So, when I found a laboratory that interested me, I decided to apply.
・How do you make the most of what you've learned?
Regarding my lab experience, I try to create novel research that bring new topics and development on the bionic communication engineering. Regarding my life experience in Japan, I try to gather the challenges that I faced and the good things that I learn from everyone and use them to support either SIT students (through my part-time job at GLC) or my friends.
・Please message for all university student and graduate student.
I think that coming to Japan, coming to SIT has been one of my best decisions in my life. That’s why I think that if you have an opportunity and you are hesitating about what to do, you should take it. Because there are two options: Either it works out fine or it doesn’t. The first case is perfect. And in the unlikely second case, I think it is better to acknowledge the mistake and learn from it, than to wonder forever what would have happened.
