  • Semester in Tokyo Engineering Program (STEP) is a study abroad program designed for undergraduate students enrolled at non-partner universities that do not have an exchange agreement with Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT). (Graduate students are not eligible for this program.) Students can remain enrolled at their home university while studying at SIT for one or two semesters. Participants may choose from a wide range of courses in various academic fields, excluding architecture-related faculties and departments. Most courses are taught in English, and opportunities to study Japanese are also available. These are offered in both English, and Japanese language lessons are also available for those interested.

Requirements

The applicant must :

      • Be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a university at the time of participation in the program. (Graduate students are not eligible.)
      • Complete this program at Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) and return to their home university before graduation.
      • Demonstrate sufficient English proficiency (submission of an official English language test score equivalent to CEFR B2* or higher is required).
      • Be physically and mentally healthy.
      • Register for at least 6 class periods (a total of 600 minutes) of coursework per week throughout the semester.

Notes on English Proficiency

* CEFR B2 is equivalent to TOEIC 785-940, IELTS 5.5-6.5, TOEFL iBT 72-94, TOEFL ITP Level 1 & 2 543-626, Cambridge English FCE 160-179, Cambridge English CAE 160-179, and Cambridge English (CPE) 162-179 (These scores may change from time to time) We accept only one test score from among these tests.
* English-based degree students are not required to submit an English proficiency score. Instead, they must submit documentation verifying that their courses are conducted in English in place of an English test score at the time of application

    ・Living expenses, accommodation, insurance, and travel costs are not included.
    ・Actual fees may vary depending on the number of registered credits.
    ・The application (registration) fee must be paid at the time of application.
    ・Admission fees and Student Support and Campus Facilities Fee per semesterwill be charged after receiving the Letter of Acceptance (LOA).
    ・We are unable to accept free-mover students for our exchange programs. Participation is limited to students who have been officially selected and nominated by his/her home university.

Nomination is included in the application process. Applicants will send a nomination request to their nominator through The Admission Office (online application system).

Japan Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening
According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), individuals who meet the following criteria are required to undergo a chest x-ray examination, etc. at a designated Panel Clinic and promptly submit the necessary documents before arrival to Japan. Please check the details in advance.
Applicants subject to JPETS:
Individuals who hold citizenship of the Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal or Indonesia  and are planning to stay in Japan with either a short-term stay visa or a student visa (for more than 90 days).
*Myanmar and China are also expected to be included in the near future, but the start date has not yet been determined.

❗Notes for Reviewing the AY2026 Course Timetable
  • Exchange students may enroll only in courses listed under the "Exchange Program" section.

  • Due to a system issue, the same courses are currently displayed in both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate tabs of the "Exchange Program" section. Courses listed under the separate "Postgraduate" section are not available to exchange students.

  • Courses under the "Other" tab may be offered outside the regular semester period. Students should normally select courses from the Monday to Saturday tabs.

  • Students may take courses from any department except Architecture, subject to course requirements.

  • Applicants must review the syllabus carefully before applying. No information beyond the published syllabus is available.

  • Please check the campus location of each course. Travel time between campuses should be taken into consideration when planning your schedule.

  • To maintain a student visa, all students must attend classes totaling at least 600 minutes (10 hours) per week throughout the semester.

  • Some courses have enrollment limits. Enrollment is not guaranteed, even for courses required by your home institution.

  • Please ensure that your browser language is not set to Japanese.

  • The AY2027 timetable has not yet been finalized. The AY2026 timetable is provided for reference only and does not guarantee the courses, class days, or schedules that will be offered in AY2027. The AY2027 timetable is expected to be released around mid-March 2027.
