Prof.Serizawa_gpbl_2019_r2
During 6 days, the intensive global PBL program of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering will be held at the Chulalongkorn University of Thailand with the students of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Chulalongkorn University. The advantage of this program is to carry out the activity which finds out the solution for SDGs problems in a small group. In detail, the discussion will be performed to find out the solution to the current SDGs problem in Materials Engineering.

Then the group’s presentation will behold. To enhance the efficiency of learning, the students will learn and practice the technical English for engineering and get lectures about basic Material Engineering and SDGs with English along with this program. Based on this experience, the students are expecting engineers who can be active overseas and solve the SDGs problem in Materials Engineering.

▲ An experiment using the synchronous generator

The supply of electric power is very important in maintaining this modern society. For a reliable power supply, advanced generator control is necessary to maintain stable frequency and voltage. In this PBL, we will learn how to control a generator by studying control theory. In the beginning, we will use a Tool kit to learn control theory, and then we will try to design a generator control system to maintain good power quality.

Providing electricity is quite important to sustain modern society. In order to realize high quality electricity reliability, sophisticated generator control is required so that stable frequency and voltage are maintained. This PBL provides opportunity to understand how to control generator with learning control theory. In beginning, students at each university learn control theory using a kit. After understanding the control theory, students try to design generator controller to maintain good power quality. The experiment is performed at SIT so the deep discussion and role assignment is necessary.

Students will learn what kind of electronic and optical devices are actually used, and what kind of technology is used there. Japanese and Thai students will also jointly investigate and learn through discussion what technologies are required in the future. The target is the second, third, and fourth-graders, and it is expected that it will lead to the research exchange of KMUTT and SIT in the future. The following is a concrete plan: survey of how and what products are used in Thailand (the difference from Japan), and by the electronic products sold in Thailand electrical stores, disassemble it in a team of 2 Japanese and 2 Thai, examine the used electronic and optical parts, and find out the specs and functions of the product and the technology used on the Internet, etc. Finally, students will make presentations. surabaya

This is a Global Project-Based Learning program with Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Indonesia, designed as an international industry-academy collaboration supported by IHI Corporation and its Asia Pacific regional subsidiary and liaison office. Its scope is to identify social issues of Surabaya, the 2nd largest city in Indonesia, design possible solutions, and propose future implementation. Each of the 8 groups consists of 2 SIT and another 2 ITS students. They select 1 theme from “Low Carbon Society”, “Smart Urban mobility”, “Infrastructure & City Planning”, or “Disaster Prevention”, for conducting situation analysis, issue identification, discussion about possible solutions, and final presentation. Online lectures are conducted every Saturday morning from 23rd October until 27th November. For SIT students, a preparatory workshop will be provided for the purpose of improving interactive English skills and developing useful knowledge for expediting learnings from this practice.

“Experiencing New Normal through 360 Camera” is initiated by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS Surabaya) and in a great collaboration with 4 prominent universities in Asia including Shibaura Institute of Technology - Japan, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology – Taiwan, Suranaree University of Technology - Thailand, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka – Malaysia.
This virtual short program aims to give room for discussion and create ideas to face new normal adaptation during a pandemic. A total number of 24 groups which consist of 6-7 students from different backgrounds work together virtually in 6 meetings every Saturday at 08.00-10.30 GMT+7. By implementing a global project based learning system and equipping the groups with 360 cameras during the project, having a more comprehensive understanding and giving a new learning experience of project location for the participants are highly expected. Moreover, this program may result in several new improved ideas of new normal implementations in some locations.

Global project based learning (gPBL) will be held at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Thailand. The students joining this program will discuss the concepts for their original measurement systems with an embedded micro-computer. A useful framework is provided for scratching their concept system. The students can easily build their own systems just by replacing the sensors in the provided framework with their target sensors. The results of group work will be evaluated by the degree of achievement of their concept. If the students are working on their research themes including sensing devices or measurements of physical quantities, we believe the program should be useful for their work. Also, the program could provide a chance for future research collaborations between KMUTT and SIT.

This year (2021), we will respond to the situation where we have to switch online depending on the situation of COVID-19. In the program, students first visit institutes and companies involved in the theme and begin with discovering problems.
The final proposal content is to explain the concept, by making proposals including not only function designs, motion simulation, and control algorithms, but also energy-saving and price setting, it is possible to make detailed designs utilizing the specialty fields of participants. This is a very good opportunity to make the most of the knowledge and experience cultivated in the compulsory

The workshop students will be divided into mixed groups - with students from Sydney University and SIT, working together. The goal is for each group of students to understand the social and physical context of an area -Fukagawa in 2019 and Kanda in 2020 and understand how to create a designed response that emerges from and enriches that culture. The students will learn how to identify the ‘hidden context’ in the small, complex area in which many different un-connected activities take place. This project raises the question of how to respond to the context.
The research done in this workshop will investigate the underlying histories and patterns of use and show how these complex areas are in fact clusters of coherent architecture. The project will bring together students and teachers from many different countries - many of the Sydney-based students were born in other parts of Asia, and the teachers will be from Japan, Australia, and Britain. Therefore, a uniquely broad range of different perspectives, and experiences, will under-lay the study.
