Social Thermal Applications and Engineering Laboratory

Approaching thermal phenomena closely related to society

In the universe we live in, real energy conversion processes are inherently irreversible and are accompanied by entropy generation, as described by the second law of thermodynamics. Consequently, not all input energy can be converted into useful work, and a portion of it is inevitably dissipated as heat. Heat is therefore inseparably connected to virtually every aspect of human society, including power generation, transportation, information and communication technologies, urban activities, and even the physiological processes that sustain human life. Our laboratory aims to investigate thermal, fluid, and energy-related phenomena from multiple perspectives by integrating experimental measurements, numerical simulations, and data analysis, while creating new research seeds that can contribute to practical applications in society. Our current research topics include visualization and investigation of transition phenomena in natural and mixed convection boundary layers using Background-Oriented Schlieren techniques; development of human thermoregulation models for extreme thermal environments, including the effects of non-Fourier heat conduction; spatiotemporal analysis of urban activity and energy use based on satellite observation data; and the conversion of energy value into monetary value through the use of Bitcoin. Through these studies, we seek to expand the scope of thermal engineering into interdisciplinary fields encompassing human physiology, urban systems, information science, and energy economics, with the ultimate goal of establishing a new framework of Social Thermal Application Engineering.
