Biomolecular Chemistry Laboratory

Creating new materials by fusing the powers of life and chemistry

In this laboratory, we synthesize materials at the molecular level. We create functional molecules by designing and creating molecules through organic synthesis. DNA and proteins, which are biomolecules, are already working molecules. However, we are modifying biomolecules from an organic chemical viewpoint to create functional molecules with more intelligence and new functions. (1) Synthesis of artificial DNA (2) Design and synthesis of artificial antibodies using DNA nanotechnology (by DNA origami) (3) Rapid synthesis of unnatural nucleosides using bioreactors (4) Development of probes to selectively distinguish cells

FOR SOCIETY

We have already succeeded in swiftly and easily synthesizing value-added drugs with the use of bioreactors. Moreover, some of them are already in use after a reagent maker applied for the patents.

RESEARCH THEMES

  • Development of artificial DNAs
  • Synthesis of new functional materials with the use of enzymes
  • Synthesis of new functional materials with the use of enzymes
  • Creation of artificial antibody using two-dimensionally integrated molecules with DNA oligami
