Tourism Architectural Design Laboratory

This is a research laboratory that designs architecture from a tourism perspective.

This initiative aims to expand the scope of science and engineering research at the University of Technology by bridging the domains of tourism and architectural design, thereby fostering further interdisciplinary research. In contemporary Japan, which aspires to become a tourism-oriented nation, a tourism perspective is indispensable in various contexts when practising architectural design and urban planning. Therefore, we will focus on analysing domestic and international modern and contemporary architectural and urban planning cases from a tourism perspective. This involves not only identifying their value as tourism assets but also researching and implementing educational practices concerning the necessary planning and design theories, utilisation methods (such as town management), and approaches to contribute to tourism. Moreover, viewing architecture and cities through the lens of tourism not only fosters cross-disciplinary thinking but also provides opportunities to objectively observe and connect architecture and cities from an external perspective. Furthermore, by integrating the interdisciplinary field of tourism studies with architectural design, we expand the potential of architecture beyond mere physical structures or site-specific concerns. This approach broadens architectural possibilities within the societal context of Japan's aspiration to become a tourism-oriented nation. This initiative not only extends the traditional boundaries of architectural design but also serves as a pathway from interdisciplinary research fields, including those integrating arts and sciences, into the domain of architectural design.

FOR SOCIETY

A cross-disciplinary perspective encompassing tourism and architectural design is vital for Japanese society as it strives to become a tourism-oriented nation. Analysing architecture and cities from a tourism viewpoint to identify their value and potential applications can enhance regional appeal and inspire proposals for urban utilisation. Furthermore, incorporating the external perspective of tourism facilitates an objective understanding of architecture and fosters new, interdisciplinary ideas. Through interdisciplinary research and education linking tourism and architecture, we will expand the potential of architectural design within society and contribute to building a more prosperous future.

RESEARCH THEMES

  • We analyze domestic and international architectural and urban planning cases from a tourism perspective to identify and clarify their value as tourism assets.
  • We develop planning and design theories, along with methods of urban use, that enable architecture and cities to contribute to tourism, and incorporate these findings into education.
  • By integrating tourism with architectural design, we promote interdisciplinary research that expands architectural possibilities beyond site-bound or purely physical considerations, situating design within broader social contexts.
