Summer Skybox: A Device Representing the Sky
for Personalized Day Cycle
●本文

Some international students are confused with less sun during the Japanese winter. They have to rely on artificial clock times and often miss their connection with nature; in COVID-19, the situation is even worse because they are in their homes all day, isolated from nature. We aim to ease this situation by introducing personalized daylight cycle that makes up for the less sun and disconnection with nature.

We developed Summer Skybox using "Slow Technology" concept, the device lives in users’ peripheral vision while they study/work at home. It uses light and cycles through simulated sun colors in a day. The result shows that it can help students adapt to the winter and reflect and to have reflection and connection to their hometown.

In the future, we think "Slow Technology" (a design that presents some information slowly/alternatively, inviting users to reflect) is important for our current society where amount of digital data and distraction are huge. We think this design concept can give a break for the users in a busy world. We hope that this field of Slow Technology continues to provide more out-of-the-box interaction in this field of Human-Computer Interaction.
