Nurturing scientists and engineers who learn from the world and contribute to the world

About 40 years ago, when I was a student, only a tiny handful of my friends traveled overseas while in university. Among these, only those who were particularly internationally oriented actually studied while abroad. A teacher at the time told me, “Society is increasingly globalizing. Study language to be ready for it.” This was at a time when there were almost no students from overseas at our university, so I doubt how well I understood the weight of those words.

Now, society has become exactly as my teacher predicted. Most of my friends who graduated at the same time as me have experienced overseas work assignments, and more than a few of them are even permanently living overseas. Without a doubt, by the time all of you graduate and begin working, society will have undergone even further globalization.

In 2014, the Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) was selected to join the Top Global University Project. This opportunity accelerated the university’s pace of internationalization. Masato Murakami, SIT’s former president, advocated for internationalization by re-phrasing the university’s founding philosophy of “nurturing engineers who learn from society and contribute to society” to “nurturing scientists and engineers who learn from the world and contribute to the world.” Moving forward, SIT will continue to promote university-wide internationalization. We provide a broad range of opportunities for international exchange in which, I hope, you will not hesitate to participate.
