All about Shibaura

Shibaura Institute of Technology Junior and Senior High School is attached to Shibaura Institute of Technology University (SIT), and provides general education for six years. It does not offer technical courses. Shibaura Junior and Senior High has a unique curriculum that seeks to influence certain educational goals. These goals include how to develop a personality in harmony with others, a competent scholastic ability that students can use to build upon during the next stage of education, and the pursuit of a happy and fulfilling life in line with a global view. Our continuing goal is the nurturing of individuals so that they can contribute positively to international society in the 21st century.

We would like our graduates to remain healthy and intelligent, and to be creative, generous, and well-mannered. They should be able to make the right decisions and behave correctly, assert themselves, and perform their obligations and responsibilities to the utmost whether at home or abroad.

Our priority is to provide students with an environment which creates the foundation for establishing their identity, rather than cramming in knowledge only for a college entrance exam.

History of Shibaura Junior and Senior High School

SIT celebrated the 80th anniversary of its founding in 2007. The senior high school was founded in 1954 with the junior high school being established in 1982. On April 1st of the same year both schools moved to Itabashi Ward where they remain today. In July of 1984 the building containing the swimming pool, cafeteria and several smaller special classrooms was completed. The addition of an archery range was completed in March of 1991. Soon after in June, the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Itabashi school building and the founding of the junior high school was celebrated.

Special Features

Homestay

One of the more prestigious points of Shibaura is our homestay program. Each year the entire student body from 3rd year Junior High is sent overseas to the United States to study English with an American family. Approximately one hundred and twenty students go to the state of Utah, and the others approximately 50) go to Seattle, Washington. The homestay takes place in September and has a duration of two weeks. Students live with homestay families, two students per family, and learn how to live life the 'American Way' with all activities conducted completely in English. This program is very popular and the high point of most students' junior high school education. In addition to the homestay, students also attend classes everyday at the university and frequent excursions are held throughout the program to local points of interest such as the Bryce Canyon.

English Education - Comprehensive English Classes

The aim of our program is to produce well-rounded international-minded individuals capable of making intelligent choices for their futures.
Our courses are taught by both native speakers and by bilingual Japanese. The programs help students have the opportunity to interact with their teachers which not only gives them many chances to use English but also increases their motivation to do so. Students are not limited to standard texts but are exposed to a wide variety of different English media including actual materials used in American schools.
Students may also participate in our annual speech contest and do essay writing wherein they get a chance to put their knowledge to use in a creative and active way. They are helped along by native speakers who support their making the best use of what they have been learning. Further chances to interact with native speakers can be had when participating in either the after school E.S.S club or the English Square, an informal gathering for those students wishing to increase their fluency.

Computer Room

Computer Science Education

From the first year of junior high school to the third year of high school students are able to avail themselves of original "Information Education" in the computer lab.
Our school gives students ample opportunities to use the computer lab in every grade. Students learn how to make presentations using the PowerPoint program, how to make maps using 3DCG, how to invent robots, as well as learning programming.
The computers used in our lab are updated regularly ensuring we always have state-of-the-art equipment and our operating systems as well are always the latest versions. The Lab is always open to students both during lunch hour and after school for anyone who wants to get in more computer time on their own.
