About Special Admission for International Students (SSFS)
S.I.T offers courses in more than 80 subjects in English at the Graduate School of Engineering and Science. International students who want to pursue a Master’s degree only in English are considered eligible for graduation when they fulfill the requirements for the completion of the program.
To be admitted to S.I.T Graduate School of Engineering and Science, international students who satisfy the admission eligibility requirements (see table below) are required to (1) take an essay exam and (2) pass an interview.

Applicants must satisfy both items 1 and 2, plus either of items A, B, C, D or E.
|1||Possess neither Japanese nationality nor permanent resident status in Japan|
|2||Have sufficient proficiency to study and conduct research in English|
|A||Foreign students who have graduated or will graduate from a Japanese university by 31 March in the year of intended enrollment (Spring enrollment) or by 30 September in the year of intended enrollment (Fall enrollment)|
|B||Students who have finished or will finish 16 years of education or equivalent outside Japan by 31 March in the year of intended enrollment (Spring enrollment) or by 30 September in the year of intended enrollment (Fall enrollment)|
|C||Foreign students from a country where one is not required to take 16 years to finish undergraduate education, having had a working experience in any university or research institution in Japan or outside Japan after graduation by 31 March in the year of intended enrollment (Spring enrollment) or by 30 September in the year of intended enrollment (Fall enrollment) and being recognized by the S.I.T Academic Committee of Graduate School of Engineering and Science as having the same academic capability as a Bachelor’s degree holder|
|D||A person who has finished or is expected to finish 15 years of education or equivalent outside Japan, and is also recognized by the S.I.T Academic Committee of Graduate School of Engineering and Science as a Bachelor’s degree holder with excellent grades for prescribed credits|
|E||A person who is recognized by the S.I.T Academic Committee of Graduate School of Engineering and Science as having the same academic capability as a Bachelor’s degree holder|
NOTE: If you apply in terms of C, D or E, you are subject to Prequalification. In that case, you must refer to “Prequalification of Applicant” in the Application Guidelines and follow the instructions therein.

- STEP 2: CONTACT your preferred supervisor and REQUEST an acceptance letter
- STEP 3: PREPARE the application documents
- STEP 4: SUBMIT the documents

*Attach the following documents in order to introduce yourself to the professor of your interest:
a. Cover Letter – Describe why you want to study under the professor.
b. Curriculum Vitae
c. Research Plan – Make sure your plan fits his/her field of expertise before sending.
d. Certificate of Graduation or Expected Date of Graduation
e. Transcript (aka. Academic Record)
*The documents need to be detailed enough to obtain acceptance from the professor.
*You may not seek acceptance from multiple professors at once. You may proceed to contact another professor only after the first professor declined your request.
Refer to SIT’s Application Guidelines and prepare all of the required documents outlined in the Guidelines. The Application Guidelines will be published online in early October (for spring enrollment) and early May (for all enrollment).
