Expanding the faculty exchange to the enhancement on further collaboration between the universities.

Shibaura Institute of technology (Koto-ku, Tokyo/ President Masato Murakami) has been actively interacted with science and engineering universities around the world. SIT has also signed a partnership agreement with AGH University of Science and Technology, and has been consistently working on research collaboration and faculty/students exchange. And at this time, SIT has decided to conduct the Overseas Dispatch mainly in the field of chemistry, with Jan Kochanoqski University and Lodz University of Technology, based on the Erasmus+, starting from February 2018.

In 2018, SIT will send 2 professors, 1 administrative staff, and 2 students, and accept 1 student from Jan Kochanowski University, and will also send 1 professor to Lodz University of Technology as well. Professors will conduct a lecture, administrative staff will join the internship, and students will participate in the classes and labs in this exchange. By doing so, SIT is strongly aiming for long-term academic collaboration with the partner universities not only for exchange between professors, administrative staff, and student.

SIT is the only Private University of Technology which has selected as a Super Global University, since 2014. In 2007, the number of the students who studied abroad was 37. But the number of the students had increased rapidly and it became 1,070 in 2016. The number had increased 29 times in 10 years. We will keep on putting efforts on expanding and strengthening the relationship between the overseas universities to provide more opportunities for students to study abroad.

Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the EU's programme which is to promote international exchange. The European Union set budget of €14.7 billion for the seven years (2014-2020), and will provide scholarships to over 2 million students, and financial support to the universities participating in the program. 181 projects had applied for Short-Term Study Abroad between Japan and Europe in 2017 FY. And as a result, 84 projects, 515 applicants in total had selected in Erasmus+, including 2 students from SIT. (The application for the program is only allowed to submit from the European Universities.)

Background

Shibaura Institute of Technology and Poland have been promoting cooperation by having collaboration such as faculty/student exchange with AGH University of Science and Technology, and we also have been conducting collaborative research among professors with Jan Kochanowski University and Lodz University of Technology and at this time, we signed a partnership agreement between the universities for strengthen the relationship in fiscal 2017. Furthermore, this mutual overseas dispatch had implemented due to the application for the Erasmus+ from the Jan Kochanoqski university and Lodz University of Technology. Most of travel and accommodation expenses are subsidized. So this allows professors, administrative staff and students to concentrate on their research and study by the agreement.

Future progress

We will promote mutual research exchanges and aim to increase the number of international joint research. In addition, we will continue our mission that is to “foster engineers and scientists who can learn from the world and can contribute to the global sustainability”, as letting more students experience study abroad in a laboratory type.
